Racing and Bloodstock Services

The vets at Wessex Equine have a particular interest in thoroughbred breeding and racing.  We provide a comprehensive veterinary service to studs, breaking/spelling yards and training establishments.

Bloodstock and Sales work

rb1

Wessex Equine are employed by Doncaster Bloodstock to provide on-site veterinary cover at all their major bloodstock sales.
Wessex also regularly attend bloodstock sales in Newmarket and Ireland to provide pre-purchase examinations of foals, yearlings and older horses on behalf of our clients.

In addition, we also work closely with our clients at home to help ensure that their bloodstock arrive at the sales or training yard in optimum condition.  This includes close monitoring of body condition and conformation, as well as radiographic and endoscopic assessment when appropriate.  Individual programmes are put in place to help manage the individual animal to assist the stud in presenting an animal in peak condition.  In addition, we offer competitive packages for pre-sales radiographs and video endoscopes for vendors.

Racing Work

rb2

Routine yard visits are tailored to meet the individual trainer’s preferences. We offer a full spectrum of services, from routine blood screening to detailed poor performance investigations. We are particularly keen on working with trainers to try and prevent problems before they impact on racing performance. This includes gait assessment, radiographic screening, endoscopic evaluation of airways, blood work and gastroscopy.

Diagnostic Workrb4

Diagnostic work is undertaken at the yard wherever possible. Our wireless digital x-ray system and portable ultrasound scanner provide immediate results, enabling prompt treatment to be administered as necessary. We have a selection of video endoscopes, which are suitable for upper airway assessment, obtaining tracheal washes and gastroscopy of horses in training. We also have a narrow diameter endoscope for yearlings and foals.

Bloods, tracheal washes and swabs are transported by our free laboratory courier service so results are received without delay. As well as a written laboratory report, results are interpreted and reported over the phone as practical advice by the treating vet.
